What I'm doing here

This is very much a fragment — it feels important to have an orienting note to kick things off. So, what am I doing here?

We all have a unique perspective on the world, and I have a strangely unique one. I've spent an ungodly amount of time thinking about pretty distant technology domains.

First, I'm a trained geospatial data scientist, geographer, biologist and environmental scientist. This runs deep, and has revolved around maps and mapping data, modeling and measuring Earth systems, and recognizing patterns and cause-and-effect relationships.

Second, I've been fascinated by "Web3" for a long time. I see it as a movement to rebuild the Internet — our primary communication system — based on a set of design principles that are making it more reliable and dignified.

A close friend of mine recently asked me: "So are you still doing that Bitcoin and GIS stuff?" Yes, distant — but framing Web3 as a set of design principles opened up a lot of fruitful avenues in looking at how those principles could be applied to geospatial data technologies, which have a huge role to play in us skillfully managing natural and social systems.

Aside from this, I'm here to fully engage and fully express my gifts. I love exploring the world (under natural power if possible), connecting with people and learning what they're interested in, thinking about wildly divergent ideas, from things like the past and future of national identity to how a marine diesel raw water cooling system works ...
